State Parks Closures

Not sure how many of you have been following this but the state budget
crisis is about to deprive us of many of our best dive sites,
including Point Lobos.

The California State Parks Foundation is reporting that this is the
list of State Parks proposed to be closed this year. It's nearly all
of them. Basically the only parks left open would be the ones
generating enough revenue to pay for themselves.

Hi, I wanted to update everyone on what's happening with the threatened Point Lobos/State Parks closure proposals.

Suzanne and I have been in communication with the area's park superintendent to get the running costs and income of Point Lobos to access strategies to keep the park open. If we're relatively close if the figures between running costs and income, then a simple proposed fee increase would put Point Lobos in the self sustaining parks category.

If not, then other solutions can be proposed to cut down on operating costs, increasing fees, or reducing the number of days the park is open. We'll then work with the Calif State Parks Foundation to propose that to our legislators and the governor. I've already been speaking to Dana Jones, the State Parks Superintendent on these matters.

And customize the letter a bit adding Point Lobos to the subject and the body of the e-mail and send. They will then print out a copy and fax to the governor and your state legislators.

It would be a travesty for them to close Point Lobos. We'll keep you updated on what else we need to do.
