Default Rescue class?

Hey all,

Does anyone have suggestions for a good rescue class/instructor in the bay area? Specifically, I'm looking for someone who is friendly to doubles/DIR gear configuration (and preferably without any kind of AOW-level prerequisite).

I'm also soliciting comments on how useful a rescue class would be in general, especially for the pre-tech route...

Thanks!
Kenn

You might want to ask Harry Babicka this question. He is Tech 2 certified and does some teaching for Diver Dan's. Since I know nothing about what is in a Rescue Class I can't comment.

Default Rescue class

Kenn,
I'm familiar with PADI format of the Rescue Class and AOW is a pre-requisite. The format of the class follows the prescribed standards so theoretically, you get a similar experience regardless of the dive shop you select. As far as rescue taylored more towards tech diving, I have not heard of a specific rescue class by a tech diving agency, but I'm not sure. I remember rescue skills included in GUE Tech 1 and Cave 1, but it was mostly surfacing an unresponsive diver and in water ventilations. GUE puts a lot of emphasis on dive planning and avoiding problems as well as dealing with problems if they come up, so taking any GUE class includes a lot of information that should be part of any rescue class.

I haven't been through Tech1, but I have read the rescue related materials in Tech1

Given that, and the training I've received in DIRF and PADI Rescue, the only thing I don't see GUE Tech1 and DIRF covering is dealing with the panicked diver.

However, as Harry said -- "GUE puts a lot of emphasis on dive planning and avoiding problems as well as dealing with problems if they come up" which if diving with like-minded, equally trained divers would negate the topic.

If memory serves me right, for PADI rescue class gear config is irrelevant.
The emphasis is on dealing with issues typical for inexperienced or vacation-style divers (problem recognition and prevention, panicked diver, unresponsive diver, first aid, some contingency planning etc..) IMHO it's useful, not all divers out there is GUE trained.
