This site is also known as Arc de Triomphe. It is named for the beautiful arch/swim-through in the pinnacle. The Arch proper has some hydrocoral, dense corynactis cover and usually features excellent visibility. Pelagic animals like this salp chain are frequently seen here. (Warning large file). Other fairly common visitors include Mola molas and large schools of blue rockfish.
To the west of the arch there is a sheer wall dropping to 140 feet with gorgonians and encrusting sponges. |

Nice big rocky area, so when the swells kick up, you don't get quite as much of a sand-storm as you might at places like Eric's Pinnacle.

Very colorful, fairly steep pinnacle structure with dense Corynactis and sponge cover. Far off Pt Pinos, heavy boat traffic, subject to currents.
Large boulder fields extend out. Named by Ed Cooper for the plentiful lead cannonballs caught on to the reef off the tackle of salmon fishermen. |

This is probably the most widely-used training site in monterey and carmel. Parking is relatively plentiful, though can get difficult during the summer before noon (after noon you can park in the trailer spots, which opens things up a bunch).
The entry is pretty easy, with a nice even sand beach and surf-zone. This area is fairly well-protected from most of the prevailing swells and winds.
A long rock wall provides plenty of areas for sea life to make homes. If you kick out to the end of the rock wall you will almost always be greeted by several sea lions.
This area is a particularly nice area for night diving. Octopi are plentiful, and a common site is Rainbow Nudibranchs (Dendronotus iris) eating the tube anemones.

Outer Butterfly House is an area that is fairly large, and extends outside the kelp belds of Butterfly House from the B.H. cove on north to the corner of Copper Roof House.
Area has some of the better hydrocoral in Carmel Bay, with nice canyons running SE-NW.

Divers should turn west from Hwy. 1 onto Ribera Road. Ribera Road intersects with Highway 1 between the Crossroads and Monastery Beach. Parking is available at the intersection of Ribera Road and Cuesta Way in Carmel. There is limited parking and divers must hike down 80 steps on a well-maintained stairway of railroad ties. Enter off the beach near the rocks to the right or left. |

The stairs here are the killer part of diving here. Don't even consider doing it in doubles, and consider staging your gear on the beach. This area is often pretty exposed so entries/exits can be tough. Beautiful area.

Be careful not to cut into the kelp bed area too soon, as it's really shallow with dense kelp. If there's any swell it can get dangerous. Also watch for long-shore currents that can take you down the beach a ways.
